1. Density method: check the density of all kinds of plastics, check the ups and downs of plastics in liquid medium with liquid as medium, so as to roughly identify the major categories of plastics. If a piece of plastic is placed in water and floats on the water surface, it can be concluded that the raw material is not PVC (because the density of PVC is more than 1).

2. Combustion method: mainly examine the color of the flame and the smell and smoke emitted during combustion. Generally speaking, the flame of polyolefin raw material combustion is mostly blue or light blue, and the smell is mild and light, and the smoke is white. Most raw materials with benzene or chlorine are easy to emit black smoke and have strong smell after combustion. ABS is the only one. In addition, for example, PE and PP have drop burning phenomenon, while PVC has no drop burning, but self extinguishing phenomenon.

3. Optical method: mainly check the transparency of raw materials. The commonly used transparent materials are PS, PC, PMMA and as; the translucent raw materials are PE, random copolymerization PP, homopolymer PP, soft PVC, transparent ABS, etc., and other raw materials are basically opaque.

4. Color discrimination: Generally speaking, if the raw materials without additives contain double bonds, the color will be slightly yellow. For example, ABS, due to butadiene copolymerization, the polymer still contains double bonds, so it will appear slightly yellow.

Most of the other identification methods rely on various instruments, such as infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, differential thermal scanning, thermal analysis and so on.
